The Square Funnel designed by Guo Bo, Xie Qiuquan, Wang Shuai, Zheng Jianwen and Yang Fukai is a winner of the 2012 Red Dot Award for concept design. The square funnel's design relieves the air pressure that the typical round funnel could not. The square design is not only for the top bowl-shaped part but also for the neck. Traditional necks are cylindrical, which fit perfectly into the necks of bottles, which obstructs the airflow. By inserting the square neck into the round the opening, air pressure can be released through the gaps on the side, which in turn increases the speed of the liquid that is draining into the container. From Red Dot: "The spouts on funnels are typically round in section to allow them to fit into the necks of bottles. When the funnel fits the bottle’s neck snugly, however, the air inside the bottle is unable to escape. The liquid being transferred will flow slowly as a result of the pressure that builds up in the bottle. To resolve this and prevent the funnel from overflowing, the user must hold the funnel up to create a gap through which air can escape. With its square spout, Square Funnel overcomes these issues. Since the spout does not fit snugly into the round bottle neck, gaps remain at the mouth of the bottle through which the displaced air can flow. As a result, the liquid can be poured much faster."
